The Irish Driving Theory Test: Complete Guide for 2026

The driving theory test is the first official step towards an Irish driving licence. Anyone applying for a first learner permit must pass it before they can get behind the wheel. This guide covers the test format, what it costs, how to book, how to prepare and what happens after you pass.

What is the theory test?

The theory test is a computer-based exam taken at accredited test centres across Ireland, run by the Driver Theory Test Service (DTTS) on behalf of the Road Safety Authority (RSA). It tests your knowledge of the Rules of the Road, road signs, risk management, safe driving behaviour and vehicle awareness. These are the foundations you need before learning to drive.

Theory test format: questions, time and pass mark

The car (Category B) test has 40 multiple-choice questions to answer in 45 minutes, with a pass mark of 35 out of 40. Questions are drawn from 5 topic areas:

• Managing Risk
• Safe and Responsible Driving
• Technical Matters

How much does the theory test cost?

The official test fee is €45 for the car/motorcycle test. Pricing is set by the DTTS, so double-check theorytest.ie before you book.

How to book your theory test

The theory test is booked through the official Driver Theory Test Service at theorytest.ie. You'll need a PPS number and a valid form of ID. Book well ahead, because centre availability varies and popular centres can fill up weeks in advance.

One thing to be clear about: Theory Tester is an independent practice tool. Booking happens only through the official service. We help you prepare for the test, but we don't run it.

What to bring on test day

Bring a current accepted form of photo ID and arrive about 15 minutes early. At the centre you'll register at reception, be shown to a computer test station and get a short familiarisation before the test starts.

ID requirements are set by the DTTS and can change, so confirm the current list of accepted documents on the official site when you book.

How hard is the theory test?

Honestly? Not very, as long as you prepare. Pass rates are high for candidates who put the practice in. Most failures come from three things: unfamiliarity with the question style, time pressure on the day and weak spots in specific categories. The fix for all three is the same: practise with realistic questions until the format feels routine. A good rule of thumb is to keep practising until you consistently score 38 or higher in mock exams before you book.

How long is the theory test certificate valid?

Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years. You must apply for your learner permit within that window. If the certificate expires first, you'll need to sit the test again.

After you pass: next steps

• Apply for your learner permit through the NDLS.
• Complete 12 EDT (Essential Driver Training) lessons with an approved driving instructor.
• Hold the learner permit for a minimum of 6 months.
• Book the practical driving test.
